篆书：
篆，本是小篆、大篆的合称。
大篆，狭义专指籀(zhòu)文。广义指甲骨文、金文、籀文和春秋战国时通行于六国的文字。
小篆，又称秦篆，是由大篆省略改变而来的一种字体，产生于战国后期的秦国，通行于秦代和西汉前期。古人认为篆书为苍颉(jié)所造，但不可考。中国文字发展到小篆阶段，逐渐开始定型〈轮廓、笔划、结构定型〉，象形意味消弱，使文字更加符号化，减少了书写和人读方面的混淆和困难，这也是我国历史上第一次运用行政手段大规模地规范文字的产物。
隶书；隶书也叫“隶字”、“古书”。是在篆书基础上，为适应书写便捷的需要产生的字体。即小篆加以简化，又把小篆匀圆的线条变成平直方正的笔画，便于书写。隶书的出现，是古代文字与书法的一大变革，是汉字演变史上的一个转折点，奠定了楷书的基础。“隶变”的意义十分深远。它使中国的象形文字进入由点画组成的方块字，它把象形文字需要的弧曲线条统统变化为规整的点画波挑，字形由纵长变成横势的扁方形，这实在是人类文化的一大进步。隶书结体扁平、工整、精巧。到东汉时，撇、捺等点画美化为向上挑起，轻重顿挫富有变化，具有书法艺术美，风格也趋多样化，极具艺术欣赏的价值。
楷书：楷书也叫正楷、真书、正书。从隶书逐渐演变而来，更趋简化，字形由扁改方，笔划中简省了汉隶的波势，横平竖直。《辞海》解释说它“形体方正，笔画平直、可作楷模。故名。”楷书始于汉末，通行至今，长盛不衰。楷书的特点在于规矩整齐，所以称为楷法，一直沿用至今。
从字体结构和书写方式来看，这三种书法比较平稳，属于静的艺术。
草书：是为书写便捷而产生的一种书体。《说文解字》中说；"汉兴有草书"。草书始于汉初，其 特点是：存字之梗概，损隶之规矩，纵任奔逸，赴速急就，因草创之意，谓之草书。当时通用的是“草隶”，即潦草的隶书，后来逐渐发展，形成一种具有艺术价值的书法形式。草书的特点是结构简省、笔画连绵。
行书：是介于草楷之间之间的一种字体，字形灵活，书写便利。它是为了弥补楷书的书写速度太慢和草书的难于辨认而产生的，笔势不象草书那样潦草，也不要求楷书那样端正，可以说是楷书的草化或草书的楷化。《宣和书谱》中说：“自隶法扫地而真几于拘，草几于放，介乎两者间行书存焉。”意思就是隶法解体后，写得近于谨严些的就成了真书，写得近于奔放些的就成了草书。楷法多于草法的叫“行楷”。草法多于楷法的叫“行草”。行书大约是在东汉末年产生的。
行书、草书运动感很强，是一种动的艺术。
