EURO2008: 06/18/2008

Group Phase is over. As I said yesterday, Russia went through and will face Holland. Hiddink is the same Hiddink - still a magic man. He led unexperienced and young Russia into second stage after the terrible first game against Spain. Having watched Russia v Sweden game for 70 minutes, I am really impressed. Russia fully deserved the victory. However, Sweden are aging and they cannot keep the pace with Russian most of the times. In up field, Russian passes are extremely fast and sharp; Sweden have very hard time to deal with them. Both goals are from counter-attack. Look at their 2nd goal, it's beautiful. It's like being copied from a soccer textbook. Sweden are short of ideas. They never looked seriously threating Russia. But I liked Sweden in a way that even they lost they played honestly and seriously. They never play tricks.

Tomorrow, Portugal plays Germany in QF. It's the moment of truth for the pre-tournament favorite. German coach is banned from touchline. I cannot image how Germany can win that game based on their performance and form so far. Unless Portugal collapses like Czech playing against Turks, Portugal should be able to send Germany home.
